Went with my friends who are of Mexican heritage and they both said it was as authentic as it gets for Mexican food. When someone says it reminds them of the grandmother's cooking, you know it's legit.
I have eaten their twice and have truly enjoyed it both times. Excellent food and they make the tortillas in house every day. Doesn't get better than that. Plus it is extremely reasonably priced. Excellent and authentic Mexican at its finest. -

¡Muy rico! I finally got to try Abuelita's and I'm so glad that I did. This is a solid 5 star restaurant - no questions asked! I will definitely be back.
The staff is very friendly, the establishment is clean and decorated well...and the food...muy delicioso! I got the steak and cactus. It comes with rice and beans, plus tortillas. The flavor, excellent. The meat, tender. My tongue, happy!!
Do yourself a favor and go get down on this RVA gem for some home cooked style Mexican. It's good...really good! 5 all the way! -

It's just so homey. It isn't what people think of as Mexican food and that alone deserves attention; the food was delicious and heartwarming and interesting and it is absolutely a niche that needs filling. The restaurant is a very simple place, with a hot line where you choose a stew to go with some sides and then head for your table like a cafeteria- basic stuff for the uncertain [very meat and potatoes], stew with nopales [cactus, which I love] for those more comfortable. It's also incredibly cheap and filly- Do not get the double unless you're starving, stick with the small plate.
Also the place inexplicably has some of the best tiramisu in Richmond. Who knew? -

Came by today and had a GREAT meal. Beware - portions are huge and will fill you up immediately! I got a chico (small plate), which comes with beans (refried or black) and rice (with carrots and corn). I decided to have the Mole de Pollo after taste testing a few guisos, and it was delicious. All plates come with fresh tortillas, which are steaming hot and go great with all the food. The chicken was really flavorful and came straight off the bone.
Their horchata is on a completely different level than any I've had before. It had a great, sweet flavor and the level of cinnamon was perfect! The owner came by to tell me that they also sell horchata by the gallon - I'll have to come back and bring some home. -

I give it 5 stars. Perfection
Loved this place. The best authentic Mexican food I've found in Richmond. Their specialty is stews and gravys just like I imagine "Grandma" would make.
The ladies serving the food all have different aprons on and are so gracious. Great salsa bar and homemade tortillas.
